Vitamin supplements

The term vitamin has originated from two words vital and amine, because vitamins are required for life and were originally thought to be amines. Vitamins are chemicals which are required in very small quantities to keep you healthy. If a particular vitamin is missing from your diet you will suffer from a deficiency disease. Vitamins, on the basis of their solubility, can be classified into two categories: fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins. Different vitamins have different significances respectively.

Who needs vitamin
supplements?
Vitamins supplements are required by:
* Women: pregnant women need extra amounts of calcium and iron in order to ensure their health along with their child's strong bones and teeth. Calcium can be eaten in the form of calcium citrate and calcium carbonate. They are inexpensive and easy to swallow also. Women who bleed excessively during menstruation may also need an extra multivitamin supplement to overcome the deficiencies. Lactating women also need to take specific vitamin supplements.
* Vegetarians: Vegetarians are advised to take extra nutrients in the form of vitamin supplements that their non-vegetarian counterparts may be easily getting.
* Dieters: Dieters are a group of people who need to take extra vitamin supplements to make up for their lost nutrients.
* People suffering from deficiency diseases: such people need a dose of vitamin supplements to overcome their deficiencies. People taking prescription medications that interfere with the absorption of nutrients may also need higher dose supplements, as will those who are into alcohol or drugs.

Negative effects of vitamin supplements:
Supplements in general, if taken in amounts higher than what is required, can have dangerous consequences as follows:
* High doses of fat soluble vitamins (vitamin A, D, E, and K) can be toxic.
* Large folate intakes can hide vitamin B12 deficiencies
* If 100 times the require amount is taken the work of the anticonvulsant drugs stops.
* High levels of vitamin B6 also lead to some types of nerve damage.
* High doses of vitamin A may lead to birth defects as well as central nervous system, liver, bone and skin disorders.

Vitamin supplements, as a prescribed dose can really help an individual but if consumed recklessly, can cause serious damage to the body.
